The queue started more than 2 hours before the tickets went on sale this morning for the F.A. Cup 2nd round between Canvey and Northampton Town. By 10am a couple of hundred people had joined the queue that snaked away from the door to the old nightclub at Kings.

A special telephone hotline has also been set up on 01268 511888. This will be open during the same hours that the box office is open. Today that is 10am to 4pm, and 7 to 9pm.See below for ticket prices.

Credit cards are being accepted, although there will be a small administration fee involved.         26/11/01

Today, Canvey travel to 14th in the table, Hampton & Richmond. But they will be without a few of their key players. Yesterday Tilson underwent knee surgery, and in a few days time, Mick Bodley will also be going under the knife, also for knee trouble. Parmenter & Ward are also still expected to be missing from the starting line-up, although Stimson has now served his three match ban, and is likely to return to mid-field. The game kicks off as usual at 3pm, and the result and report will be on-line later today.       24/11/01

So the PFA have called a strike from December 1st. This will mean that all league club players will refuse to play in front of TV cameras from this date, unless their demands are met. The action which is backed by 99% of members, stands to benefit those players in lower leagues such as Southend United and Northampton Town. So how will this affect Canvey's game on December 9th? The good news is that it should not affect it at all, as the action relates directly to league games and does not include cup or European matches.  In fact it could actually benefit non-league football in the short term, as there is talk of more games being shown of certainly conference football, if the strike action goes ahead, and affects the schedules of sports channels.       21/11/01

With Canvey reaching the second round in successive years, how well have they done in the F.A. Cup over the years?

Canvey's first game in the F.A. Cup was against Tooting & Mitcham back in 1969. At that time Canvey were playing in the Greater London League, and managed to hold the Isthmian League side to a goalless draw at Park Lane. Although they went down in the replay, the Gulls had already made their mark in the F.A. Cup. The following year they were drawn away at Bishops Stortford, but could not repeat their heroics. Having been promoted into the Essex Senior League, Canvey entered the worlds greatest football competition, in 1987 & 88, and narrowly being beaten by Baldock & Stowmarket.

It was in 1989 that Canvey recorded their first victory in the Cup By defeating both Langford & Purfleet 3  - 0, Canvey were rewarded with a 2nd Qualifying round tie away to Cambridge City. After mixed fortunes in the next three seasons, Canvey embarked on the first of several cup runs, with victory over Brightlingsea, Basildon, Boston & Bishops Stortford. Their big reward for this was a 4th qualifying round tie away to Kettering Town. Although the Essex Senior side went down, more teams had become to fear the mighty Gulls.

To prove that 1994 was not a fluke, they went one step further in 1995, reaching the first round for the first time in their history, with a famous home tie, against Brighton & Home Albion. The Seagulls discovered that with players like Glen Pennyfather, Steve Porter & Alan Brett, Canvey were a force to be reckoned with. The match was drawn 2 - 2, in front of 3,500 people (left). You can read the match report here, and also that of the replay on 21st November.

In 1996, Canvey once again reached the 4th qualifying round, going down by a single goal to Sudbury Town. Now starting to climb through the Isthmian League, Canvey reached 3rd & 4th qualifying rounds in 1998 & 99, loosing to Lowestoft Town & St. Albans City in a replay in respective years.

Then came the 2000 season, although they struggled to win over Braintree Town, they had no problems dispatching Kings Lynn and Cambridge City, to set them selves up with a now famous 1st round tie with Port Vale. Park Lane was packed for the game, and with 2 minutes to go, Port Vale were looking forward to a 2nd round tie, but Andy Jones & Wayne Vaughan had different ideas, and so it was a midweek trip up north to Burslem. Five coaches were quickly filled, and the very healthy away support witnessed a night to remember, with a 2 -1 victory, with goals from Gregory & Vaughan. That left the small matter of playing Southend in the 2nd round. The game was switched to Roots Hall, and in front of the stadiums biggest crowd for years, Canvey went out, but took with them many memories.

And so to this season, with victories over Somersett & Ambury, Halesowen Town, Stafford Rangers, and this week over 2nd division Wigan Athletic, the stage is all set for a live TV showdown against Northampton Town on December 9th. With a capacity crowd, it will once again be a day to remember, whatever the result.

To date Canvey have played 53 F.A. Cup games, winning over 50% of them. They have had more away games, than home fixtures, but average just over 2 goals per game. For all the stats over the years, visit our F.A. Cup history Page.

If you have any memories of any Canvey F.A. Cup game, please let us know...  We have set up a small poll, where you can vote for your favourite F.A. Cup game. Click here to visit the poll. You can put your memories on the discussion board, or send them to us at admin@canveyfc.com. In particular we would like to find out the scorers from those early games, but all memories are welcomed.

They forecast a Canvey defeat, and even the most ardent Canvey fan, could not have dreamt that once again, we would defeat a 2nd Division side on their pitch, but with every member of the team putting in 110%, the impossible, became possible, when with only minutes remaining Neil Gregory, put the Gulls one nil up. A full match report with photos is now online - click here to read it.        18/11/01

Next Saturday Canvey are away to Wigan of the Football League 2nd Division. The game kicks off at 3pm. Tickets will be on sale at the gate, and no advance sales are being made. The supporters club have managed to fill all the available seats on the coaches, and due to 2 drivers being required for each coach, are unable to obtain any more coaches. For those of you who are booked onto the coaches, they leave at 6am sharp, and are expected to make two stops en-route to Wigan. The website will of course, be in Wigan, and we hope to have reports and reaction to the game online shortly after the final whistle. In the event of a draw the replay will be at Park Lane on Wednesday 28th November at 7.30pm. For more information on Wigan, the ground, hotels & travel, please refer to our Wigan travel page.       12/11/01

Jeff King has added to the already strong squad by signing two players - the first signing is Spencer Knight from Harrow Borough - Knight scored a blinder to deny Canvey all three points in the clash at the Earlsmead a few weeks ago.

The second signing is Julian Dicks, who made 315 appearances (262 League & 53 Cup) for West Ham over an 11 year spell, split by a year at Liverpool. Dicks, who is 33, scored 61 goals (50 League & 11 Cup) whilst at Upton Park. The Terminator, as he became known, has been rated as one of the best left footed defenders. He signed from Birmingham City for £300,000 in March 1998, and went on to gain two 'B' international caps playing under Graham Taylor (against Czech Republic and the old CIS in Eastern Europe)- off the pitch he was a doting dad to twin daughters and a big animal-lover who bred dogs.

Whilst he retired from professional football in 1999 to become a professional golfer, he has been playing Sunday football for Southend based Darby County.

Dicks is expected to line up for the Gull's in tomorrows game at home to Braintree Town, which kicks off at 1pm, especially as Ward, Bodley & Stimson are all unavailable.

Canvey's Boss, Jeff King said ' "Julian tells me he's fit enough to play the game at our level and that's good enough for me. He certainly looks in good shape. He plays golf every day and the man is a winner in whatever he does. He doesn't know the meaning of defeat."

Metro Radio, commentating on one game said '"Julian Dicks is everywhere. It's like they've got eleven Dicks on the field."          9/11/01

Last night the Under 18's bowed out of the F.A. Youth Cup. Wycombe Wanderers were the visitors to Park Lane, and whilst the youngsters were beaten they were not disgraced. This was the furthest that any Canvey Youth team had ever got. We will have a full match report, up shortly. To visit the Under 18's  section, which now included squad details, just click here. The result last night was Canvey Island Youth 2 Wycombe Wanderers Youth 5.     31/10/01
