The train arrived this afternoon at
2:45, and in traditional style it was late ;) After a few hairy moments, and
a few concerned looks from local residents, it finally arrived at Park Lane.
We have a few photographs from its final leg of the journey.

Some of you may well have heard
rumours that we were going to be featured on both regional TV and National
Radio, and by now are wondering why no mention has been made. The statement
below, should hopefully explain the reasons why.
You will notice in the pictures below a lady from BBC
London News, called Nicola, she was due to attend today to film for a
broadcast tonight or tomorrow on the BBC Regional News, however her bosses
have decided that an event at Canvey is not worth covering. Once again we
are seeing Canvey shunned by the regional and national media. Five Live also
pulled a radio interview early this morning, minutes before going on air.
Thank goodness we have both local radio & the local
newspapers who continue to support Canvey and the people that live on it.
Living here on Canvey we receive rather poor coverage from
regional TV - some people get Anglia, some Southern, whilst the majority of
people receive a programme that is called London News. With a name that
immediately eliminates Essex, it is obvious that they have no real interest
in us living here. Their decision today only reiterates this fact. I would
therefore encourage people to support the local media, rather than regional
or national media. Another good example is Talk Sport - we travelled up to
Burnley by car listening to Talk Sport - I can honestly say that in over 90
minutes of broadcasting a FA Cup preview, we did not here Canvey's name mentioned once -
despite the fact that we were one of just two non-league teams in the 3rd
round. The only time we have had decent coverage from the BBC was at the
Northampton game, but even then we had to listen to poor comments by two of
the commentators, and see shots of oil refineries in Kent!!
We used to have similar problems with local radio, but I
am very pleased that they now offer an excellent service to Canvey Island
FC. For example 'Classic Gold Breeze' have a weekly spot with Jeff King & 'BBC Essex'
who are regularly broadcasting from home games, and have even been spotted covering some away fixtures - shame Canvey is still not mentioned on their
radio car! BBC Essex can be heard on 95.3 & 103.5FM or 765 & 1530MW.
Breeze are on 1359 & 1431 MW.
If any of the local or national media are doing articles on Canvey, please
let us know, and we will publicise the fact to readers of this website. We
are grateful for what coverage we do get, but understandably get frustrated
by people wasting our time.
Update to this story - we have now been contacted by Five Live, who have
blamed breaking overnight stories, and BBC London who have now decided that
they will cover it in some form tomorrow evening in the sports section,
again they blame breaking stories - we can only wait and see.
Please note this is a personal viewpoint from the
webmaster of this site, and not from anyone connected with Canvey Island
Football Club, or the Supporters Club

Later today, London Underground will
be brining the train that 'Mad Al' used to operate working nights for the
engineering department of LU. The train will be named 'Alan Jenkins' in
memory of 'Mad Al'. It will be named at a ceremony tonight at Park Lane
which starts at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend, and a buffet will be
served afterwards in the club house. The train began
its journey to Park Lane yesterday afternoon, and is expected to arrive on
the Island at around 2pm. We were at the Ruislip depot yesterday to see the
train begin its journey west. The train weighs 40 Tonnes, and is 20 (60
feet) metres in length. The low loader itself weighs 35 tonnes giving a
combined weight of 75 tonnes, and around 26 metres (80 feet).
The train weighs 40 tonnes and is 60 feet in length Setting out the ramp for the train to be pulled on to the low loader Even the left hand turn at the 'Murco Garage' should be no problem for this, as it has steering at the rear. Just to give an idea of the size 'Mad Al' decorated his house just before the F.A. Trophy Final The name plate, that will be un-veilled this evening. Coverage from Nicola from BBC London

Thursday, (17th Jan) Canvey will have one of
the most unusual events ever to take place at a football ground - the naming
of a train!!Many of you will remember Alan 'Mad Al'
Jenkins who sadly died just before the start of the season - even if you did
not know if personally, you would have seen him regularly at both home and
away games voicing his opinion - and who can forget the way that he
decorated his home prior to and following the F.A. Trophy final at Villa
Park. See the picture on the left to jog your memory.
Mad Al, as he was affectionately known to fellow fans,
worked nights for London Underground, driving a maintenance train, during
the wee small hours. This train was very much 'Mad Al's', so much so, that
Al considered it to be his engine, and not L.U.'s! As a result London
Underground have decided to name a train in his memory.
The naming will take place on Thursday evening at 7.30pm,
followed by a buffet in the clubhouse. The train will be named by the MD of
London Underground. Around 40 guests have been invited by the Supporters
Club, and London Underground, and all fans are welcome to join us for the
evening.
The
engineering train - No. 773 - which Alan drove, is now being brought up to
pristine condition for the ceremony and name-plates have already been
created. The engine is pictured left.
His boss, Simon Constable, said: 'Alan was a
larger-than-life character and a model employee. He will be sorely missed
and we feel naming the train after him is a fitting way to remember him. His
two passions were trains and the football club. I think he will be looking
down and smiling when the naming ceremony goes ahead.'
It is expected to arrive on Canvey in the
afternoon, so please do not be alarmed if you see it manoeuvring it's way
around the one-way system. (Although it is a pain
to have to lay all the track from London, just for one evening!!)
For further enquiries please call 0845 345 8888.

Canvey's
defence of the F.A. Trophy reaches the 3rd round this Saturday, in a
home tie against local rivals Purfleet. Games between the two sides have
never been easy, with usually the odd single goal separating the teams. The
sides have met 16 times with Canvey winning 8 of them, loosing 6 and two
goal-less draws, the most game was just before Christmas in the league,
which resulted in a 3 - 0 victory at home for the Gulls..
At Park Lane the sequence has been LDWLWWWW.
Although, the teams have met in the F.A. Cup, the league, the league cup
(Full members), and several times in the Essex Senior Cup, this will be the
first meeting
in the Trophy. With over 2,000 watching the mid-week game against Gravesend,
the team could do with your vocal support on Saturday. Purfleet do not bring
the biggest numbers of away fans in the league but then nor do Maidenhead,
who still out-sung our supporters - let's get behind every player on the
pitch, and help them get through to the next round. The game kicks off at
3pm, and usual league admission will be charged. We will let you know any
injuries affecting the team on Friday.
Prior to the game, a presentation will be made to Canvey,
of a replica Trophy, by Mr Bryan Moore
Chairman of the Trophy committee.

Club
Secretary Frances Roche sent the following message exclusively to
CanveyFC.Com, following Saturday's terrific performance at Burnley.
We are proud to reproduce it here -
Were all of you as proud and moved as me when our little 'pub team' walked
out onto the pitch at Turf Moor on Saturday? The view from the directors
box to the 'yellow army' in the stand was breathtaking.
Thank you so much every one of you who made
the long journey (and boy was it a long journey) to Burnley.
You have no idea the relief all of us staff
feel when we go to these great clubs and see all the familiar faces of
our fantastic fans. We do appreciate the great efforts you all make in
getting to these games (anyone still awake after your early start?)
This has been a wonderful cup run for the club
not just financially but it brings all of us together - players management
staff and fans and that's what makes Canvey F.C. unique.
Thanks once again and here's to more to come -
the players appreciate all the support and so do we.
Best Wishes to you all
from Frances (Secretary C.I.F.C.)

Gull's
manager Jeff King has been names as Spall's Manager of the Month for
December. He also won the award last month. During the month Canvey won 4
league matches, a league cup game, an F.A. Trophy game, as well as the F.A.
Cup game against Northampton Town - a 100% record. Congratulations to Jeff
on an excellent month. 6/1/02 |

After
the Burnley game Jeff King spoke to CanveyFC.Com and told us how he thought
the performance was 'excellent' and the team had played better than he
or Glenn Pennyfather could have reasonably expected. He went on to say
that Canvey pushed the ball about well and he suggested that the scoreline
of 4:1 was just a bit flattering to the Lancashire side. At half-time
he told his players to go back out and do some more of the same. Jeff
was keen to point out to the assembled press that Canvey had proved they
were not just a one-year wonder team and the aim is to get better and better
each season. When asked about the impressive run of games without
defeat coming to an end Jeff seemed unconcerned. In fact, he said that
he wasn't even aware of the run until the team was on game 24. To Jeff
the important thing is to win every game, regardless of how that fits into
any statistics. Julian Dicks had so much wanted to play in this game
that he asked the club's physiotherapist to set him up with some
pain-killing injections so that he could play, such was his determination.
When asked whether he thought the team would have done better if certain
players had been available for selection Jeff replied, 'Yes,' but quickly
pointed out that they might even have done worse. 5/1/02 |

BBC
Essex will be broadcasting the entire match live tomorrow from
Burnley - so if you are not able to get to Turf Moor, then you needn't miss
any of the action. The broadcast will be on 95.3FM, 1530 MW, and as
Southend's game has been postponed, also possibly on 765 MW. Dick Davies
will be commentating on the game. Needless to say the website team will be
at the game, however we do not expect the report and photographs to be
online until the early hours of Sunday morning. The game will also be
featured on Match of the Day on BBC1 at 10.30pm. The game is not in doubt,
as the the occasional shower, and a high of 8°C
is forecast. Fans travelling on the supporters coaches are reminded that no
alcohol is permitted by law. 4/1/02 |

The worlds press and TV companies
descended on Park Lane last night. Okay well may be not the world press, but
virtually every UK newspaper, TV station, as well as local radio. On a
bitterly cold night, when the tea bar even opened to serve soup to the cold
photographers, the Keeper of the Cup, made a return visit to Park Lane, and
bought the most famous cup in the world with him. Anyone watching London
Tonight at 6.20pm, would have seen Jeff interviewed live. We have a few
photographs from the evening below. A4 copies of the photos are available
for £5 from 0845 345 8888.

Following
several enquiries over the last 48 hours, we have decide to see if
there is enough interest in flying a plane to Burnley. The flight would go
from Stansted, with a coach from Canvey to the Airport, and another coach
from Blackpool to Burnley. (Depending upon size, we might fly from Southend)
There are several aircraft available to us, and the final
cost would depend upon the numbers flying. We estimate the cost to be around
£99 per person (+ airport taxes).
If you are interested please call us on 0845 345 8888, to
register your interest - payment will be required on Friday via credit card.
The flight can only go ahead, if we have sufficient interest.
We will be covered under ATOL & ABTA, and are using the
services of Sportbookers, who also look after the travel for Spurs.
