The real thing begins When manager Jeff King saw the fixture list, he could have been forgiven for thinking that someone had a grudge against Canvey, as the first three fixtures were against 3 of the 4 other serious contenders for the league title, and two of those away from home. However it was a home fixture against Farnborough today, in a game that was never going to be an easy contest for either team. In the pre-season friendlies Canvey had fared reasonably well against the opposition with Vaughan looking a good prospect having top scored with 6 goals. However he was confined to the bench until the last third of the game, with King favouring a similar starting line up from last season with the addition of Bodley & Kennedy. Both teams took the field in new kits with 'Boro returning to their original strip of Red & White stripes, whilst Canvey were wearing a revamped yellow & blue kit. As far as the game is concerned, it wasn't one of Canvey's best performances in recent years with Canvey finding themselves on the back foot for the majority of the game, although having said that a draw would have been the fairest result. Harrison had to be on top form as both Crawshaw and Piper went just wide on several occasions, however it was Canvey that had the best chance to go into the lead on 38 minutes when a defensive fluff by Laker, let Duffy in with an open goal, but all he could do was miss-kick it sending the ball well wide of the target. In the second half a slip up by Harrison left Steve Darlington with an easy shot to take the visitors into the lead. A scrappy second half then followed with the referee (J. Beadle) stopping the game on numerous occasions, and not allowing it to flow. Clark & Vaughan came on to replace Jones & Kennedy in the 70th & 75th minutes respectively, and Vaughan showed his pace down the left wing, but was unable to get on the end of any decent crosses. The Canvey fans were easily the majority of the 643 crowd, but despite this were out-sung by the small number of travelling fans. One can understand their disappointment, but the team really needs the fans to get behind them, not only when they are winning, but more importantly when they are behind. On Tuesday the team moves on to St. Albans, and then away to Sutton in what will be another two tough games.
