F.A. Umbro Trophy - 2nd Round Saturday 27th November
Victory at last! With the supporters of Canvey used to many victories over the past few years, the recent run of four games without a win, especially against teams of lower divisions, has been hard to swallow. Some of the criticism has been just, others a bit harsh. What was important today was a victory in the F.A. Trophy. Last season Canvey got to the third round, with an away tie at Conference winners Cheltenham Town. In the local media Jeff King, the Gull's manager, has been calling for the supporters to get behind the team, he could not have been disappointed today, with both Fred with his bugle, and Glen with his fog horn in fine tune (or should that simply read fine noise!). The very vocal Canvey supporters behind the Uxbridge goal, were around 5 times the number that gave Ashley any problems. In fact with the attendance of only 140, over half must have been supporting Canvey. The crowd did not have long to wait for the first action of the game, with Canvey being awarded a free kick on the edge of the box, it was taken by Tilson, who curled it into the top right hand corner of the net, giving Daryl Pelton in goal no chance. 1 Nil. Canvey dominated the first 15 minutes with the opposition only able to kick the ball out of the park, as a method of defence. Tilson could have made it 2 nil from a nice cross from Duffy, only to see his shot miss the top of the left hand upright by a few inches. Easily the majority of goals conceded this season by Canvey have come either side of half time, and this period was Uxbridge's best opportunity to level the scores. Once Uxbridge had got their first corner on 26 minutes, they started to string together several attacks into the Canvey half. Despite this Ashley had little to trouble him in the first half, and Canvey went into the break with a lead for the first time since the St. Albans F.A. Cup replay on 18th October. In that game Canvey lost it through two early second half goals, but fate was not about to strike twice. Despite continued pressure on the Canvey goal, including a header just over from captain Mark Gill from a corner the defence managed to clear each time. At the other end another cross from Duffy saw Parmenter head just over. A Williams chip towards goal was finely tipped over the bar by Pelton on 72 minutes by which time the Canvey assault had managed to resume some of its steam which had been missing over the previous forty minutes. It was from this continued barrage that Canvey was awarded a corner, the ball was floated into the area just outside the box to meet Gary Britnell who had no problem in putting his second goal of the season, and Canvey's second goal of the day, into the back of the net. Uxbridge had their best chance of the game on 82 minutes, when Fredriksen, who had come on a couple of minutes earlier, found himself clear on the right wing, with only the advancing keeper to beat, he somehow managed to put the ball wide of the net. Duffy who is already suspended for the Carshalton game, picked up his sixth booking of the season, when fouled on 86 minutes, unfortunately he retaliated towards the Uxbridge player who was to blame for a very bad tackle, and ended up in the refs book along with the Uxbridge player. Wisely Jeff immediately replaced him with Bright, who is beginning to look a very promising young player for the years ahead. So Canvey will now go into the draw for the third round, which will be played on January 15th, and maybe enjoy a nice cup run - who knows - today Wembley came just one step closer.
