Canvey reach Wembley in FA Cup!

After Tuesday's disappointing defeat in the League Cup, it was important to get a solid start to the FA Cup this season. Whilst Canvey are seven places, above Boreham, any fan will tell you, when it comes to the FA Cup, league position can mean very little. Canvey could have opened the scoring as early as the 3rd minute when the Boreham Wood keeper fumbled a short from Parmenter, he only managed to stop it on about the 3rd attempt, inches from the line. Williamson was unlucky in the 10th minute who played a one - two with Jones only for the ball to go across the open goal, with no one able to deflect it in the back of the net.

Jones first attempt at goal came in the 20th minute from Canvey's 2nd corner, however his solid shot, was aimed directly at the keeper who merely got in the way, rather than actually saving it. Further shots on goal came from Davidson, and Parmenter whose shot was half saved by the Boreham keeper, and Tilson's shot from the rebound hit the woodwork.

Canvey's first goal came from Jones, thanks to a fine cross from Bennett. Canvey were playing with the strong northerly wind, but even this was not always a help to Canvey as players found it hard to judge long crosses which often outpaced the advancing forward.

Canvey could have gone into the break with a 2 - 0 lead if Bennett's shot was not headed behind by the Boreham defence; from the resulting corner, Canvey's 5th of the 1st half, Jones came even closer with his shot hitting the post.

Half Time 1 - 0 to Canvey

With the wind behind the visitors it was important that Canvey got an early goal, and the Canvey attack secured another corner in the 2nd minute after the break. The 2nd goal came just five minutes into the second half, with Jones giving the Boreham keeper no chance. Was Canvey going to ease into the next round?

Unfortunately the Boreham attack had other ideas and reduced the deficit  after just 3 minutes with a goal from Gary Ferguson from a cross by Andre Delisser. During the next 30 minutes Boreham had their best part of the game with several attacks up field putting Harrison under pressure in the Canvey goal. Whilst Boreham didn't look likely to sneak a victory the concern was whether Canvey would be faced with a mid week replay. During this period of play both Jones and Duffy were substituted after injuring themselves, with Brazier and Payne replacing them respectively.

Harrison was forced to save a fine shot from Howard, and hashed up a back pass giving a corner away unnecessarily, and adding extra pressure for the Canvey defence. In fact Canvey's third goal came against the run of play, with Payne's shot being deflected by the keeper for Brazier to tap in the ball at the far post, just into injury time.

The game was played in a good sprit with the only booking coming 3 minutes from time when Shafer was booked for bringing down Stimson, in Boreham's half. This was probably enough to put an end to Boreham's hopes of equalizing, and with Jeff's late substitution of Payne for Parmenter, broke the oppositions concentration, which duly led to the 3rd Canvey goal.

The final score was perhaps a little harsh on Boreham Wood, who will give the Gull's their first stern test of the next millennium when they are the hosts on the 3rd January. Only time will tell whether Canvey are still above them in the league.

So Canvey are off to Wembley in the F.A. Cup - OK not the famous twin towers, but the Ryman division two side just down the road. By then they will also know how easy the path to the first round proper will be, if they can get past the side who was relegated as Canvey were promoted to the top flight.
